Unlike other members of the dog family, wild dogs have only four toes on their forelegs. Other dogs have a vestigial fifth toe. All wild dogs have bushy tails, with white tips which may serve as a flag to keep the pack in contact while hunting. Unlike other predators wild dogs hunt in the day, being most active at dawn and dusk. When chasing prey they can reach speeds of up to 60 km per hour and sustain this for several kilometers. Wild dogs feed very quickly to avoid kills being stolen by lions and hyaenas. Nine dogs can eat the 100kg of meat from an adult kudu in just 15 minutes. Wild dogs are very efficient hunters, having a 38-85% success rate. They are nearly always more efficient than lions and spotted hyaenas in the same area. Unlike lions, even when a pack is crowded around a kill there is little strife. Young are given priority at kills, with adults stepping back to allow the pups to feed first.
