Unlike other members of the dog family, wild dogs have only four toes on their forelegs. Other dogs have a vestigial fifth toe.
All wild dogs have bushy tails, with white tips which may serve as a flag to keep the pack in contact while hunting.
Unlike other predators wild dogs hunt in the day, being most active at dawn and dusk.
When chasing prey they can reach speeds of up to 60 km per hour and sustain this for several kilometers.
Wild dogs feed very quickly to avoid kills being stolen by lions and hyaenas.
Nine dogs can eat the 100kg of meat from an adult kudu in just 15 minutes.
Wild dogs are very efficient hunters, having a 38-85% success rate.
They are nearly always more efficient than lions and spotted hyaenas in the same area.
Unlike lions, even when a pack is crowded around a kill there is little strife. Young are given priority at kills, with adults stepping back to allow the pups to feed first.

Peter was a clever boy. On his first day at school, he learned three words: 1, You and She. The teacher taught him how to make sentences with those words. The teacher said," I, I am your teacher; (then pointing to a girl) She, She is your classmate; You, You are my student.
¡¡¡¡When Peter went home, his father asked him what he had learned at school. Peter said at once, " I, I am your teacher; (then pointing to his mother) She, She is your classmate; You, You are my student His father got angry and said, "I, I am your father; (then pointing to his wife) She, She is your mother; You, You are my son.
¡¡¡¡The next morning at school, the teacher asked Peter if he had learned the three words by heart. "Yes," he said proudly, "I, I am your father; (then pointing to a girl) She, She is your mother; You, You are my son."
A rather well built woman, Joan, spent almost all of her vacation time sunbathing on the roof of her hotel. The first day she sunbathed, she wore a red bathing suit. However on the second day, she felt a little more adventurous. She slipped out of it in order to get an overall tan figuring that no one could see her way up there. She'd hardly began when she heard someone running up the stairs. She was lying on her stomach, so she just pulled a towel over her rear.
"Excuse me, miss," said a flustered little (out of breath) assistant manager of the hotel. "The Hilton doesn't mind you sunbathing on the roof, but we would very much appreciate you wearing a bathing suit as you did yesterday!"
"What difference does it make", Joan asked rather calmly. "No one can see me up here on the roof and besides, I'm covered with a towel."
"With all due respect, not exactly ma'am," said the embarrassed little man. "You are lying on the dining room skylight."
It was my first day as newcomer to Miss Hargrove¡¯s seventh grade. Past ¡°newcomer¡± experiences had been difficult, so I was very anxious to fit in. After being introduced to the class, I bravely put on a smile and took my seat, expecting to be shunned.
Lunchtime was a pleasant surprise when the girls all crowded around my table. Their chatter was friendly, so I began to relax.wow power leveling My new classmates filled me in on the school, the teachers and the other kids. It wasn¡¯t long before the class nerd was pointed out to me: Mary Lou English. Actually she called herself Mary Louise. A prim, prissy young girl with a stern visage and old-fashioned clothes, she wasn¡¯t ugly -- not even funny looking. I thought she was quite pretty, wow gold but I had sense enough not to say so. Dark-eyed and olive-skinned, she had long, silky black hair, but -- she had pipe curls! Practical shoes, long wool skirt and a starched, frilly blouse completed the image of a complete dork. The girls¡¯ whispers and giggles got louder and louder. Mary Lou made eye contact with no one as she strode past our table, chin held high with iron determination. She ate alone.
After school, the girls invited me to join them in front of the school.wow power leveling I was thrilled to be a member of the club, however tentative. We waited. For what, I didn¡¯t yet know. Oh, how I wish I had gone home, but I had a lesson to learn.
Arms wrapped around her backpack, Mary Lou came down the school steps. The taunting began - rude, biting comments and jeering from the girls. I paused, then joined right in. My momentum began to pick up as I approached her. Nasty, mean remarks fell unabated from my lips. No one could tell I¡¯d never done this before. The other girls stepped back and became my cheerleaders. Emboldened, I yanked the strap of her backpack and then pushed her. The strap broke, Mary Lou fell and I backed off. Everyone was laughing and patting me. I fit in. I was a leader.
I was not proud. Something inside me hurt.wow power leveling If you¡¯ve ever picked a wing off a butterfly, you know how I felt.
Mary Lou got up, gathered her books and -- without a tear shed or retort given -- off she went. She held her head high as a small trickle of blood ran down from her bruised knee. I watched her limp away down the street.
I turned to leave with my laughing friends and noticed a man standing beside his car. His olive skin, dark hair and handsome features told me this was her father.wow gold Respectful of Mary Lou¡¯s proud spirit, he remained still and watched the lonely girl walk toward him. Only his eyes -- shining with both grief and pride -- followed. As I passed, he looked at me in silence with burning tears that spoke to my shame and scalded my heart. He didn¡¯t speak a word.
No scolding from a teacher or preaching from a parent could linger as much as that hurt in my heart from the day a father&rsqu
o;s eyes taught me kindness and strength and dignity.wow gold I never again joined the cruel herds. I never again hurt someone for my own gain.

Zuri stalked the edges of the human marketplace, keeping watch on everything she could, scanning to see if there were any oppurtunities for her to get some substance. Normally Zuri would never resort to picking up the scraps from humans, but she hadn't had any luck with hunting on her own for a while. It seemed even when she made the smallest kill, a hyena or lion or some other predator would come and chase her away. She felt slightly disgusted with what she was doing, but she was starving and needed food NOW. She continued circling the area, every now and then a human would point and throw something at her, and everytime she easily dodged whatever it was. She wasn't leaving until she got something so if they really wanted her gone, why not throw a bit of meat her way instead? At one end of the market after Zuri was just circling it again for the 8th or 9th time, she immediately saw her chance. A clutzy two-legged who had been carrying a basket of meat above their head had stumbled, spilling the precious food all over the road. Zuri didn't hesitate or wait any longer. She immediately bolted forward on her strong legs and dashed to the scene. The human began yelling as he got up and two others came over, both trying to swat Zuri away before she could grab anything. They stood between her and the meat she needed so badly if she was to survive. Zuri had gotten impatient circling the noisy place all morning and her hunger was eating away at her from inside her stomach. She was not going to go back and miss out on this! Finally, instead of trying to dodge the human's angry blows, she stuck out her head for a lunge at one of the meat chunks, grabbing it tightly in her jaws before she felt a hard kick to her side. Zuri immediately yelped and ran, having gotten what she'd come for as she heard the angry shouts of the villager from whom she'd stolen the sweet tasting flesh in her mouth. She dove into some thick underbrush, ignoring the tugs at her lovely pelt, and stayed still, waiting to see what might happen next.

There was nothing left for him. Nothing here... everyone had gone and left his world, his home deserted. Only rubble remained. A slight breeze rustled the scrub of the African plane. Tazor blinked to flush the dust from his eyes as he surveyed his home. It seemed he was the only painted creature left on the world. He alone would have to bring his kind back, take them. Lead them and show them how to be a true wild dog. He understood he was one of the few truly wild dogs... he stood alone.
Wild dogs are social creatures and the emptiness, the desertion was killing him. Tazor could feel his insides twisting into painful knots that only another living soul could heal. Razina was gone, he was certain she had either been hunted of picked up for some medical study... how he had avoided them even the great lord himself had no clue.
Bowing his head the magnificent animal prepared to die a death fit for not even the scummiest creature. Alone, forever, a death by lions or hyenas. A horrible death unfit for the magnificent lord he could be if given the chance... what he would give to have a chance...

Serabi pricked her ears. Only if I can get by the two-legged. she said, shrugging. I only play as a friend and betray them. S'not anything major. Couple of calfs here and there... They get left behind alot when they make a fool out of themselves like that one is. She motioned towards the foolish calf.
She stood and turned away, heading back towards the tree she had been at earlier. Only someone foolish would go out while them men were still there. She then called back, Don't go up there while they are still there; you'll only meet your death. The calf will probabl be left behind anyway.
Many would think at this point she would be giving up, be making an exscuse why she wouldn't go up there. IT wasn't that she was afraid, never afraid. She had come to know these men but turn around and break the trust between them unknowingly. She knew they would not hurt her, that she at times could be more than welcome at times. But only if they never find out.... she thought with a cheerful, wicked grin.
She found herself once again under the tree's shade, watching the grass sway back and forth. Since the pack split up she no longer had anything to do, anyone to care for, anyone to love but herself. This other femme, Mumbi, I think her name was, stole her attention for the moment. If she was not social, Serabi could leave her alone and be silent. If she evr wanted to talk, well, Serabi could do that, too. But only if Mumbi had wanted to. Serabi knew better than to take over like that, to force someone to do what they didn't want to do. She turned back to see if the other dog had come and waited.
